Ways of Mental Prayer
About our drink:
GlenAllachie 12
The flagship in GlenAllachie’s new core range, released in July 2018. Matured in a mixture of virgin oak, oloroso sherry and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, this has sweet flavours of honey, marzipan, bananas and butterscotch.
The GlenAllachie Distillery sits on the Aberlour stream near where it empties into the River Spey. It was built there — less than a mile from the more famous Aberlour Distillery at the base of Ben Rinnes — in 1967 to produce Spirit for Scotch blends. It has been purchased, sold, mothballed, and opened again no fewer than four times since then.
About our gear:
Books that helped in our prayer life:
Adam’s: The Ways of Mental Prayer and Introduction to the Devout Life
David’s: Dark Night of the Soul and Discernment of Spirits
Jim’s and Juan’s: Consecration to St. Joseph
About the Topic:
Everyone wants to have a better prayer life. Vocal prayer seems to come naturally for most, but mental prayer isn’t as easy and at times can be intimidating on how to begin. This week we pull from a book by Fr. Vital Lehodey called, “The Ways of Mental Prayer”. This book, with an introductory letter from Pope St. Pius X, gives us a manual on how to engage in mental prayer, which is an elevation of the soul to God, to adore him, to thank him, to beg pardon, and ask for graces.
Dom Vital Lehodey was the fourth abbot of the Trappist monastery of Notre-Dame-de-Grace in Bricquebec, Normandy, France. In THE WAYS OF MENTAL PRAYER, he offers a systematic presentation of the teachings on contemplative prayer of St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Francis of Sales, St. Alphonsus of Liguori, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, and many more. Part One introduces the reader to contemplative or “mental” prayer. Part Two gives instructions for discursive meditation, affective prayer, and the prayer of simplicity. “As time goes on,” writes the author, “and we make progress, we shall feel drawn to a more simple form of prayer, in which the mind begins to be silent in order to let the heart speak.” Part Three describes the mystical states of quiet and union, and gives practical advice for those graced with these higher forms of prayer.

The Catholic Man Show - Intro to the 5 ways with Karlo Broussard
Thursday Dec 24, 2020
Thursday Dec 24, 2020
Karlo Broussard, Catholic Answers speaker, apologist, and author, joins us to give us a brief summary of the 5 ways in preparation for the course we are launching in January
About our drink:
Glenmorangie Malaga 12 years got a finishing maturation in Malaga wine casks.
The Glenmorangie Malaga was aged for 12 years after its distillation on February 18, 2008 (yes, the Moet Hennessy press release actually states the exact date of distillation), starting in ex-bourbon barrels for eight years. For the finishing maturation, Dr. Bill Lumsden, Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks, chose casks that previously contained Malaga Dulce, a Malaga wine with a high residual sugar content. In these ex-Malaga casks, the whisky spent another four years, following the high Glenmorangie standards of extra maturation.

3 Things to be Avoided by Parents according to the Catechism of the Council of Trent
About our drink:
Rabbit Hole Dareringer is aged in traditional American Oak barrels with an entry proof of 115. The aged bourbon is then moved to a Pedro Ximenz Sherry Cask for finishing. The mash bill on this particular expression is 68% corn, 18% wheat, and 14% malted barley. According to Rabbit Hole, Dareringer is a small batch release made up of no more than 15 barrels. This Straight Bourbon Whiskey is bottled at 93 proof, has no official age statement, and carries an MSRP of $80.
About our gear:
More of an action this week than a gear. Build up the Advent season by taking your children out caroling!
About the Topic:
Straight from the Catechism of the Council of Trent:
Three Things to be Avoided by Parents He should also admonish them to guard particularly against three things, in which they but too often transgress. In the first place, they are not by words or actions to exercise too much harshness towards their children. This is the instruction of St. Paul in his Epistle to the Colossians: “Fathers, he says, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. For there is danger that the spirit of the child may be broken, and he become abject and fearful of everything.” (Col. 3.21) Hence (the pastor) should 424 require parents to avoid too much severity and to choose rather to correct their children than to revenge themselves upon them. Should a fault be committed which requires reproof and chastisement, the parent should not, on the other hand, by undue indulgence, overlook its correction. Children are often spoiled by too much lenience and indulgence on the part of their parents. The pastor, therefore, should deter from such excessive mildness by the warning example of Heli, the high priest, who, on account of overindulgence to his sons, was visited with the heaviest chastisements. Finally, to avoid what is most shameful in the instruction and education of children, let them not propose to themselves aims that are unworthy. Many there are whose sole concern is to leave their children wealth, riches and an ample and splendid fortune; who encourage them not to piety and religion, or to honorable employment, but to avarice, and an increase of wealth, and who, provided their children are rich and wealthy, are regardless of their good name and eternal salvation. Can anything more shameful be thought or expressed? Of such parents it is true to say, that instead of bequeathing wealth to their children, they leave them rather their own wickedness and crimes for an inheritance; and instead of conducting them to Heaven, lead them to the eternal torments of Hell. The priest, therefore, should impress on the minds of parents salutary principles and should exhort them to imitate the virtuous example of Tobias, that having properly trained up their children to the service of God and to holiness of life, they may, in turn, experience at their hands abundant fruit of filial affection, respect and obedience.

The Catholic Man Show - When, Where, and Why of the Incarnation
Friday Nov 27, 2020
Friday Nov 27, 2020
Why did the Incarnation happen when it did? Dr. Richard Meloche, President of the Alcuin Institute, joins us to discuss this and the Regensburg Address
About our drink:
Midnight Ritual
Fans of Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat Beer will be able to enjoy the iconic ale like never before: as a whiskey. The collaboration with Iowa-based Foundry Distilling Co. turns nascent Unfiltered Wheat into 89 proof Midnight Ritual, an American malt whiskey.
Prior to fermentation, Unfiltered Wheat traveled by tanker from Boulevard’s Kansas City brewery to historic Valley Junction in West Des Moines, Iowa, home of Foundry Distilling Company. After distillation in Foundry’s towering column still and a slumber of more than two years in new 30-gallon #3 charred oak barrels, Midnight Ritual entices with notes of caramel, banana bread, and allspice.

Josef Pieper’s essay on, “Abuse of Language, Abuse of Power” – Let’s discuss!
About our drink:
Ardbeg Blaaack is the feisty Limited Edition bottled in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Ardbeg Committee, founded in the year 2000.
To mark such a momentous occasion, the Distillery vowed that the casks used to honour their global flock would be right on the nose. For the first time in Ardbeg’s history, they rounded up Pinot Noir casks from the country that lies the furthest distance from Islay – New Zealand, that other remote island nation where sheep have been known to outnumber the locals by 7:1.
Ardbeg Blaaack knits together velvety summer fruit pudding and bitter cherry, with a deeper edge of soot and Ardbeg’s hallmark smoke.

The Catholic Man Show - St. Joseph, Death, and Holy Souls
Friday Nov 06, 2020
Friday Nov 06, 2020
What is a good death? Why is St. Joseph the patron of a good death? Indulgences this month!
About our drink:
Whiskey Del Bac produces award-winning American Single Malt whiskey in Tucson, Arizona. 100% own-make whiskies weave the rich mosaic of the Southwestern heritage with traditional Scottish distilling methods, yielding a truly unique blend of cultures and traditions in every bottle.
About our gear:
This week we have a call to action instead of an actual gear. The Vatican has extended plenary indulgences for the dead throughout the month of November. Two main ways to gain the indulgences in the month of November: 1. Visit a cemetery and pray for the dead during the Octave of All Saints’ Day. 2. Those who piously visit a church or oratory on All Souls’ Day and recited the Our Father and the Creed. The decree also encourages priests to make the sacraments as widely available as possible during November.
About the Topic:
Why do we pray to St. Joseph for a happy death? What is a good death? Should you wait until the last hour to have your loved ones receive The Last Rites? What is an Apostolic Pardon? Will people actually go to Hell? We discuss this and a lot more in this episode.

When God called Israel out of slavery in Egypt to a life of freedom as his people, it was the defining moment in Israel’s history.
About our drink:
Deanston 12 year
The new, relaunched 12 year old, this single malt has been bottled at a slightly higher proof, negating the necessity for chill-filtration and as such retaining more of its original charm. A lovely dram from the Deanston distillery.
About our gear:
Nailers, also known as nail guns, are available in coil and strip nail loading configurations.
Coil nailers, often called siding nailers, use flexible strings of nails joined by wires forming a round magazine. This type of nail gun is more compact and can fit into more places than models requiring nail strips. Coil nailers hold more nails than other models, so you can drive more nails than strip nail guns before reloading. Once you have your siding nails and nailer, you can learn how to select siding by checking out our Siding Buying Guide.
Strip nailers use nail magazines arranged on a long, slender strip or cartridge that slides into the gun. Strips of paper, plastic or wire hold the nails together. This configuration distributes the weight of the nails, making them easier to handle compared to coil nail guns. That means electric nailers requiring strips also handle easier than coil varieties.
Nailers are effective and versatile. Some models are useful in heavy-duty, high-volume applications, while others work well for small jobs.
- Framing nailers handle large projects, such as building decks, constructing room additions or framing houses.
- Finish nailer guns are lighter than the typical framing nailer guns and work well for assembling furniture and installing cabinets, trim and molding.
- Staplers, tackers and brad nailers are compact and suited for precision work. They require specialized nails.
- Roofing nailers are designed for applying roof shingles. You can learn how by reading How to Install Shingles.
- Flooring nailers speed up the installation of hardwood flooring.
- Palm nailers are small, handheld tools that can drive nails in tight spaces. They don’t have onboard nail storage, so you have to reload them after driving each nail.
About the Topic:
This episode is taken from Dr. Tim Gray – Exodus: Called to Freedom by Ascension Press
When God called Israel out of slavery in Egypt to a life of freedom as his people, it was the defining moment in Israel’s history. Exodus: Called to Freedom looks through the lens of Christ and the Church to show that, more than just seeking to free his people from the domination of Pharaoh, God desired to free his people from the far more dangerous grip of sin. Presenter Tim Gray explains how the Exodus story is not just Israel’s story but our story as well, because it reveals who God is and what he calls us to be. Discover the divine purpose behind the plagues on Egypt and how God’s law reflects his love and concern. Learn the keys to authentic freedom and how a proper understanding of the Exodus can illuminate one’s understanding of the Christian Faith.

Many times when we sin, it is because we have entertained a disorder and perceived it to be good. When we do sin many times it is hard to forget about what we have done and we can glorify the sin. “Forgiveness of sins by God is precisely the highest and the most eminent form of the purification of memory. That is because the divine forgiveness really erases and destroys the sin, so that its weight does not burden the conscience anymore.”
How we can help purify the mind: 1. Confession 2. Adoration and an increase in prayer life which increases the theological virtue of hope 3 Holy thoughts and images.

The Catholic Man Show - Public Discourse with Dr. John Cuddeback
Friday Oct 16, 2020
Friday Oct 16, 2020
Dr. John Cuddeback joins us to discuss why we are so bad at public discourse.
About our drink:
We didn’t have a featured drink in this episode. It was recorded at 7am… we had to go to work… moderation.
About our gear:
True Friendship: Where Virtue Becomes Happiness
We all want true friends. But how many of us know what friendship is? “Friendship: The Art of Happiness” explains what friendship is, why we seek it, and why it is often hard to find. Philosopher John Cuddeback deftly weaves the timeless wisdom of the Greeks and Sacred Scripture into a practical wisdom that will show you the path to the most rewarding of human achievements – being a friend.
About the Topic:
Here’s Dr. John Cuddeback’s article we mention in the episode.
Why are we so bad at public discourse? Why can we not have civil conversations anymore? How do we cultivate good conversations within our family and teach our children to have good quality conversations? We discuss this and more with Dr. John Cuddeback in this episode. (Make sure to watch the full episode on Youtube)
About our Guest:
From Dr. John Cuddeback:
In my quarter-century as a philosophy professor, I’ve been exposed to much wisdom. I try to understand it, and I want to share what I have found.
Being married twenty-five years and raising six children has also brought a few hard-to-see things to light.
I have known the struggles of being a husband, father, friend, employee, and citizen in very confusing times.
The travails of the household—as experienced by husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, children, and others—especially consume my attention and are close to my heart. The way forward is not easy, but we can search for it and travel it, together.
My search is for refreshing and revitalizing waters from a good place. Peaceful yet challenging, silent but powerful, old as the hills and exactly what we need today.
I want to reconnect with what we already know, or at least that we can know. It’s both deep within us, and it’s out there. We need to find it, and I know we can.
My goal is a more fully human life, in its many facets, lived together in community and in life-giving relationships. I hope we can work toward this together.

No gear this week but something to do with your wife.
You and your wife write down the top 10 things that make you the happiest. Share the 10 things and think about if what you do throughout the day moves you closer to those things or further away.
This idea came from reading the book Playing with Frie by Scott Rieckens
About the Topic:
- The Good as a Cause of Love
- That it is (ST I-II:26:1)
“As stated above (Q. XXVI., A. 1), Love belongs to the appetitive power which is a passive faculty. Wherefore its object stands in relation to it as the cause of its movement or act. Therefore the cause of love must needs be love’s object. Now the proper object of love is the good; because, as stated above (Q. XXVI., AA. 1, 2), love implies a certain connaturalness or complacency of the lover for the thing beloved, and to everything, that thing is a good, which is akin and proportionate to it. It follows, therefore, that good is the proper cause of love.
- Application to Married Life
- The more virtuous, the more loveable.
- Foster natural virtues (prudence, temperance, fortitude, and justice)
- Foster supernatural virtues (faith, hope, and love)
- Beauty as a Cause of Love
- That it is (ST I-II:26:1 ad 3)
“The beautiful is the same as the good, and they differ in aspect only. For since good is what all seek, the notion of good is that which calms the desire; while the notion of the beautiful is that which calms the desire, by being seen or known. Consequently those senses chiefly regard the beautiful, which are the most cognitive, viz., sight and hearing, as ministering to reason; for we speak of beautiful sights and beautiful sounds. But in reference to the other objects of the other senses, we do not use the expression beautiful, for we do not speak of beautiful tastes, and beautiful odours. Thus it is evident that beauty adds to goodness a relation to the cognitive faculty: so that good means that which simply pleases the appetite; while the beautiful is something pleasant to apprehend.”
- Application to Married Life
- The more beautiful, the more loveable.
- Beauty as seen: e.g., physical appearances, external behavior, facial expression of mood, etc.
- Beauty as known: e.g., knowledge of spouses life, skills, ideas, etc.
- Knowledge is Cause of Love
- That it is (ST I-II:26:2)
“As stated above (A. 1), good is the cause of love, as being its object. But good is not the object of the appetite, except as apprehended. And therefore love demands some apprehension of the good that is loved. For this reason the Philosopher (Ethic. ix. 5, 12) says that bodily sight is the beginning of sensitive love: and in like manner the contemplation of spiritual beauty or goodness is the beginning of spiritual love. Accordingly knowledge is the cause of love for the same reason as good is, which can be loved only if known.”
- Application to Married Life
- The more knowledge we have of our spouses, the move loveable they become.
- Deep and meaningful conversation fosters growth in knowledge of spouse.
- Likeness is Cause of Love
- That it is (ST I-II:26:3)
“Likeness, properly speaking, is a cause of love . . . One kind of likeness arises from each thing having the same quality actually: for example, two things possessing the quality of whiteness are said to be alike . . . [this] kind of likeness causes love of friendship or well-wishing. For the very fact that two men are alike, having, as it were, one form, makes them to be, in a manner, one in that form: thus two men are one thing in the species of humanity, and two white men are one thing in whiteness. Hence the affections of one tend to the other, as being one with him; and he wishes good to him as to himself.”
- Application to Married Life
- It often occurs when one excels in an area and the other doesn’t, there can be tension. As such, we should strive to attain likeness or commonality in some areas of the spousal friendship.
- E.g., exercise, topics of study, laughing at memes, etc.

That there is a marital debt to be paid
As the slave is in the power of his master, so is one spouse in the power of the other (1 Cor. 7:4). But a slave is bound by an obligation of precept to pay his master the debt of his service according to Rom. 13:7, Render … to all men their dues, tribute to whom tribute is due, etc. Therefore husband and wife are mutually bound to the payment of the marriage debt.[1]
