In this episode Andrew talks about two separate birthday parties and how much he lives for those moments when food, wine, and conversation create a place for wonder and connection. Then, he recounts a conversation at the gym that started as overhearing a strained conversation between a black man and an older white man, and the subsequent conversation he had with the same man about the differing culture’s approach to hospitality. Finally, he gets off his notes and muses on the history and nature of hospitality as a default way of relating to people from Abraham and Homer to St. Benedict to his Southern side of the family.
