Recently, I saw an Opera at the Met called Mephistophele. This opera was an Italian adaptation of the German play called Faust. Today, I talk about the role of music and the role of the devil in this opera. The work of the devil reminds us the importance of beauty in our lives.

My mind and heart are stewing a lot on the story of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath. This was a reading that we had at the Mass on Sunday. In a way, I think we need to have the disposition of the widow because we are the widow. I talk about that insight today and the dangers of feeling we are owed things from others and God.

Today, I am talking about suicide. Why? Because, a family member of mine committed suicide at the beginning of the month of September. I am from a rural culture and this is a word people do not talk about, for many reasons. Yet, I believe the fear from speaking about this topic keeps things in the darkness and might continue a cycle of pain.

Today, I reflect on Ephesians 4: 25-29. I am thinking about this passage considering fraternal correction. I offer thoughts about needing to speak the truth and the need to reflect about how we are called to do it. Love drives out fear, so we need to speak the truth in live, in the courage the Spirit provides.

Today, I am reflecting on the readings for the 25th Sunday of Ordinary Time Year B. As I was praying with these readings one word kept striking me, harmony. The readings show us the danger of disharmony and the impact it has on community and the lives of the righteous. The wicked seek to destroy those that offer the harmony of God, because their presence shows the wicked how ugly their life and acts have become. I hope you enjoy my thoughts today.

Faith that is a gift, which is meant to be lived in the world as a means of sharing God’s love. All of this goes around the question that Jesus asked his disciples “who do you say that I am?” This is a question we are called to answer in our own lives today.

His use of scripture and the ability to witness to the need for virtue in the world makes him a necessary witness for our times. Today, I offer a reflection on 1st Cor. 4: 1-5. This passage has been on my mind and in my heart since the news about ex-Cardinal McCarrick broke. The Church, also, had this reading offered at one of Her weekly Masses. I know I will always be a priest because of the sacrament, but I know if people do not trust me, I cannot be their priest. A hard truth I think all clergy needs to hear.
