The Frank Friar - Episode 104: A Message to the Shepherds

August 1, 2018

Considering the former Cardinal McCarrick case of abuse my mind and heart has turned toward a message in the Prophet Ezekiel, Ezekiel 34: 7-10.  Within this passage the Lord speaks to the shepherds of Israel through the prophet condemning them.  The Lord says he is now against the shepherds because of their abuse of the sheep.  I believe this message is need more now than ever, so the leaders can wake up and begin to identify the weeds among the wheat and respond recording.

The Frank Friar - Episode 103: Words of Heroism for your life from Bl. Titus Brandsma

July 30, 2018

Recently, the Carmelite order on July 27th celebrated the memorial of Bl. Titus Brandsma.  He was a Dutchman who worked to keep the Nazis and their ideology out of the catholic schools and newspapers in Holland.  Today, I read a sermon he gave during the war years calling people to heroism in faith and love against the new-paganism of the Nazis.  I have always been inspired by this sermon and so I wanted to share it with you all.

July 9, 2018

This episode is going up on July 4th an important day for those in USA.  The readings at Mass have us wrestling with the Prophet Amos.  Amos should make us all uncomfortable.  What is Freedom?  What does it mean to be free and to be a Christian in the world?  These are just a few ideas I touch upon in the episode today.  Happy 4th of July to all my listeners in the USA.

The Frank Friar - Episode 97: Placing Labels on God

July 9, 2018

The Gospel reading from the 14th Sunday of Ordinary got me thinking.  Thinking about what? Our relationship with God.  The gospel was the beginning of Mark 6, the passage where the Family of Jesus start to reject him.  Within the passage it appears to me that His family has applied a lot of labels onto Jesus, labels that he is breaking.  The podcast episode today goes into this topic.

The Frank Friar - Episode 95: Death: A Wake Up Call!

July 2, 2018

In the episode today, I find myself reflecting upon the recent Sunday readings for the 13th Sunday of ordinary time.  The topics of sin, death, and God’s place in all of it comes to front and cause us to encounter these unfun topics.  Also, as my mind was stewing on these things I am also still dealing with a local death of a child, killed by other kids in my area.  This is a loaded episode, but I hope it helps you in your life.

The Frank Friar - Episode 94: Listening!

June 27, 2018

In my area of the Bronx in NYC we recently had a young man killed violently by other youth.  Many of the parish youth came to me asking to speak about this issue.  What could I say to the young, who had so many thoughts and feelings about this issue?  I believe and felt that there was nothing I could say.  All I could do was listen.  Today, I talk about what it means to listen and why it is important for us to listen.  Listening is a struggle, but we don’t do it alone, the Holy Spirit makes it possible.

The Frank Friar - Episode 93: What is a Chapter?

June 25, 2018

Recently, my Carmelite Province had our chapter.  What is a chapter?  I address that question in the episode.  I believe a chapter of a religious congregation or order is an important witness for our world today.  An important idea from St. Paul is that the Christian community is the body of Christ.  Our religious groups chapter moments are a beautiful and important witness to that reality.

The Frank Friar - Episode 91: Santeria, the Devil, and Our Joyful Response

June 11, 2018

A week ago, a group of Santeria practitioners placed many different Santeria items outside our Catholic Church in the Bronx.  In this podcast, I talk about our response as a parish and what it means for these people to leave this items at our Church.  I believe this is an event that calls for Joy and Hope in our response.  Listen to day why I think those things are necessary.

June 6, 2018

At my parish in the Bronx we have two pre-K through 8th grade schools.  Right now, all our 8th grade students are saying goodbye and thinking about high school.  As a parish we are offering them 8th grade retreats to help them process what they are going through.  Part of those retreats has me giving them a talk.  My talks this year have focused on the idea of stories.  One of the things I mentioned to them is that each of our stories being with the same words.  Listen today to find out those words and how they impact our very lives.

The Frank Friar - Episode 89: A Lesson From My Father and the Eucharist

June 4, 2018

We just celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi.  As a priest I spend a lot of time preparing my homilies.  As I was preparing for this feast day my mind kept going to a lesson from my father about life in the woods.  As I pondered that lesson I offer it to you and the insight it offers us on the Eucharist.

The Frank Friar - Episode 88: A Barrier to Prayer

May 30, 2018

As I reflect about my time of recovery my mind goes to the relationship between my times of prayer and reading.  Many good things can become barriers to our life of prayer.  In today’s podcast, I reflect upon how we can have barriers to our lives of prayer from the goods we have cultivated.  “What are our barriers to prayer?” is an important question we cannot be afraid to ask ourselves.  Take care my brothers and sisters know I am praying for you.

The Frank Friar - Episode 87: The Holy Trinity: A Few Thoughts

May 28, 2018

We are in the shadow of the Feast of the Holy Trinity.  During my time of recovery I read many books.  One of the books I read was by Bishop Robert Barron called Exploring Catholic Theology.  One of the regular themes he has in this book is that we “ARE” a relationship to God.  What does this for us in relationship to the Trinity?  Today, I talk about this idea from Bishop Barren and our lives.  I hope these thoughts helps to feed your soul today.

The Frank Friar - Episode 86: The Media, Truth, and The Holy Spirit

May 23, 2018

Part of my life as a friar and a priest is the need to stay current about timely invents to serve the people of the area.  For a while now I just see a big sickness in the mainstream media.  As disciples of Christ we are called to be discerners of Truth.  Yet, we do not discern alone but have been given certain gifts from the Spirit.  A few of the gifts that are important in our relationship with the media is the gift of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom.  Slander and Libel are serious concerns that both Pope Benedict XVI and Francis have told us about and called out the media on.  I hope my thoughts help you to continue to grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ, which is done through the power of the Spirit.
