About our drink: Vat 69
David Bates brought this from across the pond, as you can not get it here in the States. Vat 69 was the go-to scotch for Lewis, so it was very fitting for us to be sipping on the drink while talking about the Christian author.
The iconic Vat 69 bottle with its bulbous neck was introduced to the market and was not changed for about one hundred years. In 1882, William Sanderson prepared one hundred casks of blended whisky and hired a panel of experts to taste them. The batch from the cask (or “vat”) with number 69 was judged to be the best, and this provided the whisky’s brand name. The whisky was at first bottled in port bottles. In 1884, Sanderson bought the Glen Garioch distillery which was situated in the middle of a barley field. The distillery was meant to ensure the delivery of grain whisky.

About our topic:
C.S. Lewis was a British writer and theologian. He is best known for his works of fiction, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy, and for his non-fiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain.
The Screwtape Letters is a Christian apologetic novel written in a satirical format where the plot and characters are used to address Christian theological issues, primarily those to do with temptation and resistance to it.

Powerfully peaty and immensely satisfying, Ardbeg’s Corryvreckan is what happens when the distillery of Islay’s Kildalton Coast aims to make a whisky with a particularly medicinal style than its usual expressions. Aptly named after a nearby whirlpool, Corryvreckan is an intense dram that we simply love.

The Catholic Man Show - Bonus Episode: Meatsmithery 101 with Brandon Sheard
Friday Oct 25, 2019
Friday Oct 25, 2019
Bonus episode this week!
We talk with Brandon Sheard from Farmstead Meatsmith.
Bacon, curing, smoking meat, and faith. A fun episode - if you want to know more about these topics, make sure to subscribe to their podcast, A Meatsmith Harvest here. #CheerstoJesus
About our topic:
Brandon Sheard’s company, Farmstead Meatsmith, is the only abattoir, butchery, and educational operation of their kind in the country.
He generally harvests for small family farmers who raise a couple of pigs, a few sheep or a flock of various poultry for their own household. Think very small scale. The animals never leave the land they know, he uses peaceful and humane kill methods specific to each animal’s nature, and he offers every part of every animal back to the farmer.
Unlike many processors, he doesn’t know the meaning of trim. Well, he does, but that is why he doesn’t do it. He makes sure the quality fat you meant for your animal to have, stays there. Consequently, you will get all your meat back. And by that, he means 100% of hanging weight. The standard industry procedure is to dispose of as much as 50% of hanging weight.
Currently he reaches farms in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. A handful of farmers and associations have flown Brandon to the east coast, the midwest and the UK.
Because the dinner table is where the rubber meets the road, particularly with unfamiliar cuts, innards and extremities, Brandon makes himself available for advice long after he leaves your farm.
About our guest:
Brandon and Lauren met in the spring of 2007 in southern California while finishing up their graduate degrees; Brandon in Renaissance English Literature, Lauren in Religion and Theology. They dated that summer and fall, introducing each other to Kierkegaard, Milton and de Lubac and by Christmas of that year, were engaged. On the very date of their engagement they were introduced to a home-building project on Vashon, where Brandon’s parents had just migrated to from Ventura County (where Brandon grew up), and they made the move to the Island the following February. They were married June of 2008, when Brandon simultaneously left his job at Whole Foods in the supplement department, in search of more rural work closer to home.
A month later, Brandon was hired by Sea Breeze Farm on Vashon Island. There he was introduced to the arts of small scale animal husbandry, abattoir, butchery and charcuterie and worked there from August 2008-August 2010. After one year on the farm and managing markets, Brandon transitioned to la Boucherie, their restaurant and butcher shop, as head butcher and charcutier. While pregnant with their first child, Lauren helped Brandon in the shop by wrapping meat late into the night before market days, reading various culinary books on the shelves and taste testing recipes (and house made wine) at mid- work day lunches.
As their family expanded (John Luke was on the way), in the fall of 2010 Lauren and Brandon created Farmstead Meatsmith. They work well as a team; Brandon on the front lines of farmers’ fields, butcher blocks and home larders, and Lauren as the accountant, scheduler and professional washer of greasy cutting boards. They both are visionaries for the business and, above all, love witnessing good food brings people together.

About our drink: Rock Oyster Blended Malt
Rock Oyster Blended Malt Whisky
Joining Douglas Laing’s range of blended malts in early 2015, Rock Oyster is a magnificent maritime marvel made with single malts distilled on Scottish islands including Orkney, Jura, Arran and Islay. As ever from Douglas Laing, this tasty, coastal dram is very handsomely presented from top to bottom (looks like Sam will have to add an oyster to his imagination of The Douglas Laing Force).
In reference to Rock Oyster, Douglas Laing’s Managing Director Fred Laing said “If I could select just one dram to transport the whisky enthusiast to the Islands of Scotland, it would be this one.” So go on and take a coastal trip by way of wonderful blended malt Scotch whisky.
Nose: Wind-swept beaches, coastal peat and a hint of ash, complimented by touches of green fruit.
Palate: Yet more sea breeze, with oat cake crumbs, growing spicy notes of cracked black pepper and a deft whiff of peat smoke. Hints of vanilla here and there.
Finish: Salinity lasts on the finish along with peppery warmth.

Is it okay for Christians to be drinking alcohol? What does the Church say about drinking and virtue? We talk about it on Catholic Answers Focus with Cy Kellett.
Catholic Answers Focus is an exciting podcast produced by Catholic Answers. Focus highlights in-depth conversations with Catholic leaders, newsmakers, and unsung heroes of the faith. With a wide array of topics and guests, and compelling commentary on current events, Catholic Answers Focus has something for everyone.
They drink, they smoke, they make a popular show for Catholic men (The Catholic Man Show), so we ask Adam and David to justify Catholic teaching on the acceptability of drinking. Wouldn’t God prefer that we all just stay away from the sauce and stick with tea? That depends, it turns out.

Interesting Facts about the Battle
- A young contemporary of Don John’s, Miguel Cervantes, fought with abandon and lost his left hand to a Turkish blade. With his remaining hand, he later penned Spain’s greatest novel, Don Quixote.
- On another galley, a soldier of the Holy League, his soul torn with despair, took his sword to the ship’s crucifix. The blade instantly shattered. Many years later, an attempt to re-forge the sword was made, but when the new blade was pulled from the fire, it fell to pieces.
- The crucifix on board the Real, which twisted itself to avoid a Turkish cannonball, is displayed in a side chapel of the cathedral of Barcelona.
- Gianandrea Doria carried on his galley a gift from the king of Spain, an image that is now displayed in the Doria chapel in the cathedral in Genoa. Exactly forty years before the battle of Lepanto, the Blessed Virgin appeared to a peasant boy leaving a miraculous image of herself on his smock. The bishop of the region immediately commissioned an artist to paint five copies of the image, and he touched each one to the original. Our Lady of Guadalupe was present at Lepanto.

About our topic:
The virtue of piety.
Here’s what Aquinas says on piety.
A special virtue is one that regards an object under a special aspect. Since, then, the nature of justice consists in rendering another person his due, wherever there is a special aspect of something due to a person, there is a special virtue. Now a thing is indebted in a special way to that which is its connatural principle of being and government. And piety regards this principle, inasmuch as it pays duty and homage to our parents and country, and to those who are related thereto. Therefore piety is a special virtue.

About our drink:
A 24-oz. bottle of Sam Adams Utopias retails for $199 and weighs in at 28% alcohol by volume. It’s a blended beer, aged in various bourbon and port barrels for up to 20 years. Added to that is the brewery’s wild ale, Kosmic Mother Funk, aged on Hungarian oak. The uncarbonated beverage is technically beer—brewed with hops and malts using traditional methods—but tastes somewhere between brandy and barleywine. There’s certainly nothing else like it on the market, and less than 15,000 bottles were made. If you want to taste something unique, I would recommend buying a bottle with friends. The 24 ounces can easily satisfy the curiosity of a dozen drinkers after a big hearty meal. Or if dropping two benjamins is no big, buy a bottle as a gift to make a big impression. Even your snobby Cognac drinkers will be surprised this is beer.

Extraordinary patience under provocation or trial. Also called long-suffering. It is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. It includes forbearance, which adds to long-suffering the implication of restraint in expressing one’s feelings or in demanding punishment or one’s due. The Catholic Man Show - The Virtue of Vengeance

Adam and David talk about vengeance in this week’s episode. Is it lawful? Is it a special virtue? And the 4 sins that cry to Heaven for Vengeance

About our drink:
Thank you to Mr. Taylor Barranco for the drink. Fireside Whiskey is a 4 year aged Straight Bourbon that is a nice bourbon to have in your cabinet. It is dangerously smooth but still maintains all of the robust flavor gained from aging for more than 4 years in brand new white oak barrels. A nice end of summer dram.
About the gear:
A miter saw (also known as a “mitre” outside of the United States) is a saw used to make accurate crosscuts and miters in a workpiece by pulling a large backsaw or a mounted circular saw blade down onto a board in a quick motion. Miter saws are commonly referred to as drop saws and abrasive cut off saws are referred to as a chop saw.
About our topic:
WHETHER VENGEANCE IS LAWFUL?
I answer that, Vengeance consists in the infliction of a penal evil on one who has sinned. Accordingly, in the matter of vengeance, we must consider the mind of the avenger. For if his intention is directed chiefly to the evil of the person on whom he takes vengeance, and rests there, then his vengeance is altogether unlawful: because to take pleasure in another’s evil belongs to hatred, which is contrary to the charity whereby we are bound to love all men. Nor is it an excuse that he intends the evil of one who has unjustly inflicted evil on him, as neither is a man excused for hating one that hates him: for a man may not sin against another just because the latter has already sinned against him, since this is to be overcome by evil, which was forbidden by the Apostle, who says (Rom. 12:21): Be not overcome by evil, but overcome evil by good.
If, however, the avenger’s intention be directed chiefly to some good, to be obtained by means of the punishment of the person who has sinned (for instance that the sinner may amend, or at least that he may be restrained and others be not disturbed, that justice may be upheld, and God honoured), then vengeance may be lawful, provided other due circumstances be observed.
WHETHER VENGEANCE IS A SPECIAL VIRTUE?
I answer that, As the Philosopher states (Ethic. ii. 1), aptitude to virtue is in us by nature, but the complement of virtue is in us through habituation or some other cause. Hence it is evident that virtues perfect us so that we follow in due manner our natural inclinations, which belong to the natural right. Wherefore to every definite natural inclination there corresponds a special virtue. Now there is a special inclination of nature to remove harm, for which reason animals have the irascible power distinct from the concupiscible. Man resists harm by defending himself against wrongs, lest they be inflicted on him, or he avenges those which have already been inflicted on him, with the intention, not of harming, but of removing the harm done. And this belongs to vengeance, for Tully says (loc. cit.) that by vengeance we resist force, or wrong, and in general whatever is obscure* (i.e. derogatory), either by self-defense or by avenging it. Therefore vengeance is a special virtue.
WHETHER VENGEANCE SHOULD BE WROUGHT BY MEANS OF PUNISHMENTS CUSTOMARY AMONG MEN?
I answer that, Vengeance is lawful and virtuous so far as it tends to the prevention of evil. Now some who are not influenced by motive of virtue are prevented from committing sin, through fear of losing those things which they love more than those they obtain by sinning, else fear would be no restraint to sin. Consequently vengeance for sin should be taken by depriving a man of what he loves most. Now the things which man loves most are life, bodily safety, his own freedom, and external goods such as riches, his country and his good name. Wherefore, according to Augustine’s reckoning (De Civ. Dei xxi.), Tully writes that the laws recognize eight kinds of punishment: namely, death, whereby man is deprived of life; stripes, retaliation, or the loss of eye for eye, whereby man forfeits his bodily safety; slavery, and imprisonment, whereby he is deprived of freedom; exile, whereby he is banished from his country; fines, whereby he is mulcted in his riches; ignominy, whereby he loses his good name.
4 sins that cry to Heaven for Vengeance
1. Murder – “the blood of able”
2. Sodomy – “the sins of the Sodomites”
3. Oppression of the poor – “cry of the people oppressed in Egypt”
4. Injustice to the wage earner – not paying wages owed
a. Dt 24:14-15 – 14 You shall not withhold the wages of poor and needy laborers, whether other Israelites or aliens who reside in your land in one of your towns. 15 You shall pay them their wages daily before sunset, because they are poor and their livelihood depends on them; otherwise they might cry to the Lord against you, and you would incur guilt.

The Cycle of the Christian Life
Meeting Jesus is the beginning of new life. From this encounter, we are free to choose whether we follow Him or return to our former lives. If we follow, we become converted, bit by bit, to be like Him. This allows us to enter into shared lives of love with Him, a state we call communion. Those who enter communion with Christ have everything (the summit of the spiritual life), but they cannot keep it to themselves or it will die. From communion we must go on mission to help others to meet Christ. In this passing on of the Faith, the cycle begins anew both for the one sharing and the one hearing. This is the fundamental cycle of the Christian life, and the way of eternal life handed down by the Apostles: Encounter, Conversion, Communion, and Mission.

- 32:23 – Is there still hope for authentic friendship in the overly sexualized world today? How can I make new friends?
- 45:55 – What is Jesus’ role in friendship? Also, how can I maintain strong long-distance friendships?

Questions covered on Fatherhood:
- 14:32 – What is the best way to help our kids set goals? Do you agree with the approach “heaven, not Harvard?”
- 21:09 – I am a new father, for the last month. Right now, my wife is tired, so I have been doing most of the household chores. How can I talk to her about doing more around the house? I work all day and then come home and I’m basically still working.
- 32:25 – I think sacrificing in a sacramental marriage is love. There is biblical evidence for this kind of masculinity.
- 38:06 – I am a father of 9 and I have some suggestions for the young father on the line. I took over cooking for my wife and just found easy ways to make simple meals. Take time to listen to your wife every day, even if it’s the same conversation as the day before.
- 42:57 – What are your thoughts on a relationship with a Catholic and a Protestant, when the Protestant would be the father and spiritual leader of the family?
- 47:45 – My priest told me that my job was to help my wife and children become saints and that changed my whole outlook on being a father and a husband.
A special thank you to Cy Kellett, Nick Chamberlin, Darin Delozier, and the whole Catholic Answers team for their help in making this happen. We had a great time and really enjoyed it.

About our drink:
Bernheim Kentucky Straight Whiskey
At its launch, Bernheim Original Straight Wheat Whiskey was the first truly new variety of American straight wheat whiskey introduced since Prohibition. Heaven Hill Master Distillers saw an opportunity to give today’s whiskey connoisseurs a unique taste experience. Bernheim was the only straight whiskey to use winter wheat as the primary grain in its mashbill, giving it a soft, sweet flavor and medium finish.
Today, on the front of the bottle, Bernheim proudly displays its finest attributes: Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey, small batch, and a 7 year age statement. With an age statement of 7 years, Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey truly is well worth the wheat. It is the only straight wheat whiskey distributed nationally. As a straight whiskey, it meets the same criteria as Bourbon or rye—aged a minimum of two years in new, charred oak barrels, distilled at less than 160 proof, and contains no coloring, flavoring or blending agents. As a small batch product, it is made with a dump of 100 barrels or less.

Buffalo Bill Cody lived life large. Born just a mile from our distillery, we honor his legend with a BIG whiskey. This limited wheated bourbon is hand-selected one barrel at a time. Bottled at barrel proof of 105, we encourage you to live life large the Cody Road way.
Grain bill
70% corn, 20% wheat, 10% barley
Serving style
Add a splash of water or an ice cube to bring out the big flavor. Outstanding in classic cocktails like an Old Fashioned or a Julep.
Tasting notes
Bold vanilla and caramel soar out of this high proof bourbon. The sweetness of corn gives way to buttery wheat and a unique finish of roasted nuts and toffee
About the gear:
Paracord.
Parachute cord (also paracord or 550 cord when referring to type-III paracord) is a lightweight nylon kernmantle rope originally used in the suspension lines of parachutes. This cord is useful for many other tasks and is now used as a general purpose utility cord by both military personnel and civilians. This versatile cord was used by astronauts during the 82nd Space Shuttle mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope.[1]
The braided sheath has a high number of interwoven strands for its size, giving it a relatively smooth texture. The all-nylon construction makes paracord fairly elastic.
Current technical standards for the manufacture of cord for use in parachutes are published by the Parachute Industry Association. The US military MIL-C-5040H standard required the material to be nylon.[2] Similar styles of cord are manufactured with other materials such as polyester.[3]

About our topic:
Obedience is a topic that isn’t talked about much. Possibly because authority isn’t taken seriously anymore. Possibly because we live in a world that doesn’t know how to deny our own will. We discuss these implications in this week’s episode.

The Virtue of Hope: How Confidence in God can Lead You to Heaven by Fr. Philip Bonchanski
The Virtue of Hope is excellent spiritual reading for everyone, an instruction manual for how to grow in hope and in bravery in the face of life’s challenges. It is a clarion call that hope must not be merely theoretical, but must “lead us to a deeper relationship with God, an encounter with the One who loves us and calls us to friendship with Himself.”
About our topic:
We try to lay out what hope is but also shows how we can exercise this theological virtue, through being daring, changing our ways, serving the Lord, struggling, suffering, and praying. We examine how hope directs us to our ultimate goal of life with God and gives us the strength and perseverance to attain it.
About our guest:
Father Philip G. Bochanski, a native of suburban Philadelphia, was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 1999. In addition to several parish assignments, he has served as a high school teacher, chaplain for cloistered nuns, and spiritual director for seminarians. In 2017, he was appointed the executive director of Courage International, an apostolate that provides pastoral care to men and women who experience same-sex attractions and have chosen to live a chaste life. He is an award-winning author, and has published several articles, books and audio lecture series on such topics as Church history, spirituality and pastoral care.
