The Catholic Man Show - Eucharist, Adoration, and the Hobbit
Friday Sep 17, 2021
Friday Sep 17, 2021
It was Dave’s turn to pick the topic. He said the day before recording, “I’ve been asking God what he wants us to talk about this week and I feel like He is just wanting us to chat with no agenda.” So…. That’s what we did.
About our drink:
This Limited Edition Double Cask Wyoming whiskey is aged in a most unique maturation environment in the whiskey world. Kirby has a sub-zero cold winter and desert blistering hot summer weather to make the juice dance in and out of the oak cradle. That environment is tough on people, but it’s extreme have great potential for the whiskey aging. The Double Cask Limited Edition starts with the same wheated bourbon used in the Small Batch and Single Barrels. The mashbill is 68% Corn, 20% Wheat, 12% Malted Barley, aged for five years in new, charred white oak barrels and finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks before bottling at 50% ABV.
The whiskey is not chill filtered and has a dark rich mahogany color in my glass evidencing the romantic dance in a sherry cask for finishing. The nose bursts with sweet dried fruits and candied fig jelly. The Wyoming Whiskey Double Cask has a wonderful aroma which I could nose for hours.
On the palate I experience a saucy, rich and syrupy juice reminding me of butter sautéed mulberries with hints of vanilla, dried raisins and orange candy sprinkles. The finish is intensely warm and long with notes of oak, more dried fruit, fig jelly and fresh-ground cinnamon spice. This whiskey is just plain good and it’s exciting for me to see this smaller distillery growing.

The Catholic Man Show - Intro to the Devout Life
Monday Sep 06, 2021
Monday Sep 06, 2021
We want to grow in holiness. We want to grow in our relationship with our Lord. But how do we do it? Let’s see what the spiritual master, St. Francis de Sales, has to say.
About our drink:
Iowa- Templeton Rye 10 Year Reserve, a limited production, is a true expression of what American Rye can become with each release bottled from a hand-selected single barrel. Awarded Double Gold Medal SF World Spirits Competition 2021 and earned Gold Medal SIP Awards 2021.
About our gear:
Intro to Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales
Written over 400 years ago, Introduction to the Devout Life is still one of the most popular books for those pursuing holiness. St. Francis de Sales explains how to turn that desire for sanctity into resolutions that yield grace-filled results.
Themes include:
- Pursuing a devout life whole-heartedly
- Incorporating prayer and sacraments into a busy
schedule - Growing in virtue
- Battling wisely against temptation
- Making spiritual progress through daily, monthly, and yearly exercises
Whether you are just beginning your spiritual journey or are more advanced in the spiritual life, you’ll be able to apply this timeless wisdom immediately. Let St. Francis de Sales illumine the path to holiness and strengthen your desire to walk that road with the Lord.
St. Francis de Sales (1567–1622) was the Bishop of Geneva and a renowned spiritual director. Preaching during the Counter-Reformation, he is estimated to have converted 70,000 Calvinists in his short lifetime. He was a fervent proponent of the universal call to holiness and spent much of his time guiding lay people on the road to sanctity. Declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1877, St. Francis is still helping to form saints through his many writings, of which Introduction to the Devout Life is the most famous.

We sip on a delicious bourbon, Smoking Wagon, thanks to Chase Mascaro while discussing one of the more serious topics we have ever discussed on TCMS.
About our drink:
Our high rye content bourbon is aged in the heart of a century-old brick warehouse. To ensure a unique and consistent flavor, barrels are hand selected to create a perfect blend that is smooth and at the same time bold and intense.
Released in 2016, our goal was to create a unique great tasting high rye content bourbon.
The problem is that rye ages much faster than corn.
So while our younger vintages had a big rye spice flavor (which we love) the mouth feel was too thin and it lacked the sweet, delicate complexity of a well aged spirit. Our older vintages had the smoothness and sweet notes that can only be achieved by moving in and out of #4 char and caramelized oak for many, many years, but the nice rye spice had been aged out!
So what to do? Find the perfect blend.
We combined the two. The younger vintages maintain the bold spiciness of the rye, cut down on the tannins and keep it fruit forward. The older vintage brings in a creamy mouth feel with sweet aromas and taste notes that only appear over time from aging in a barrel. We hope you enjoy drinking it as much as we enjoy making it.
Nose:
Balanced oak nose with hints of fruit and dried apricots.
Taste:
Initial sweet notes on the front of the tongue. Well balanced mouth feel with spicy notes including white pepper on the middle and back of the tongue from the younger vintage and high rye mash bill.
Good balance of sweet and oak flavors including hints of caramel (from the #4 charred barrels, caramelized wood sugar), fruit flavor and rye spice. Finishes smooth with no alcohol burn even at 100 proof.

We asked Jim and Kendra some tips and tricks of the trade in regards to living liturgically and family prayer life.
About our drink:
Weller Full Proof
William Larue Weller developed his original bourbon recipe with wheat, rather than rye. Bottled at the same 114 proof the spirit was when it entered into the barrel, this non-chill filtered wheated bourbon forgoes chill filtration to preserve all the naturally occurring residual oils and flavors that occur during the distillation and aging process (potentially making it appear cloudy at cold temperatures). This bourbon balances a rich mouth feel, with robust notes of vanilla and oak. A whiskey that satisfies the demand of the non-chill filtered whiskey enthusiasts, honoring the man who made wheated bourbon legendary.

We reflect on the quote from Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange, “Our Lord saved the world even more by His heroic love on the cross than by His sermons.”
About our drink:
Wyoming Whiskey they are proud of their state and their spirits. the distillery was founded in 2009 by Kate and Brad Mead and their friend David DeFazio. But they had the help of an experienced guiding hand — Steve Nally, former master distiller at Makers Mark. The first commercial Whiskey was released as a four year old in 2012, but they state that all current Whiskies are a minimum of five years old. Importantly, they state loud and clear that none of their spirits are sourced. Every drop is distilled and aged on site at their facility in the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming, all the grains are farmed within one hundred miles, and the water comes forma local well sunk into an ancient limestone aquifer. And you’ve just got to respect that.

Awarded 94 Points in the 2016 Ultimate Spirits Competition earning it a Great Value, this High Rye Bourbon gains its delicate smoothness in our unique Reserve Aging Method. Drop cloths
A drop cloth is a sheet of material used by painters to protect floors and furniture from the drips and drabs that can trickle down from above. If you have a paintbrush in one hand and a paint can in the other, there should always be a drop cloth underneath you. That’s one of the cardinal rules of painting. But you can do more with a drop cloth than just prevent paint from getting everywhere – let’s discuss.
About the Topic:
How to prepare you and your family for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass:
1. Arrive early
a. If you aren’t early, you’re late
b. Sundays can be stressful, you need time to decompress
2. Silence
a. Must be practiced for children and adults
b. Especially the minutes before Mass
c. If you want to take your preparation to the next level then try to adopt a mantra of silence beginning when you rise on Sunday until after Holy Mass
i. “The person who talks constantly grows empty, and his emptiness is not only momentary… Only the word that emerges from silence is substantial and powerful.” Romano Guardini – Meditations Before Mass
3. Composure
a. Silence (at least interior) is a prerequisite for composure, but composure is one step beyond silence
i. Silence overcomes noise, composure overcomes distractions
ii. Composure is a silence that penetrates our interior
iii. Composure is what allows us to be present
1. “Once composure has been established, the liturgy is possible. Not before.”
b. This is why we need to arrive early, so we have time to compose ourselves
i. When you arrive honestly confront your restlessness, distractions, and disorder
4. Prepare your gifts for the altar
a. Our tithe should not be given as if we are paying a bill
b. “When we place the money in the basket, let it be with reverence to God and with charity to all.” RG
c. Our gift should be a true sacrifice
5. Know the readings
a. Can help overcome distractions during Mass: kids
b. Meditate on them before Mass.
c. Read the readings every day. Gives deeper perspective and insight into the narrative
6. Have a prayer intention for the Mass
a. Helps me invest myself emotionally into the liturgy
b. A Mass without an intention is a wasted oportunity

Fruits of Prayer from the Council of Trent
The Council of Trent was called to counter the Protestant Reformation by unambiguously affirming the distinctive truths of the Catholic faith. To disseminate these truths, the Council of Trent commanded a Catechism to be written. Composed under the supervision of St. Charles Borromeo and promulgated by St. Pope St. Pius V, its value as an authoritative exposition of the Catholic faith has only increased through the centuries.
While originally intended for priests to use alongside the Sacred Scriptures in defending the faith, its straightforward and logical explanation of Catholic doctrinal and moral teachings makes it a useful reference and guide for the laity more than 400 years after it was first published. Today, it continues to enlighten souls who seek to discern between true and false teachings.
This edition is the definitive translation of the Catechism of the Council of Trent from the original Latin. The book is divided into four parts which explain, respectively, the Articles of Faith, the Seven Sacraments, the Ten Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer. There are also appendices on the Immaculate Conception, Papal Infallibility, Christian Marriage and on Frequent and Daily Communion.

We have our good friend, Andrew Pudewa, join us to talk about the moral imagination, martyrdom, and fear.
About our drink:
Corner Creek has quietly been around as a “modern” brand since the late 1980’s. During this time the brand has passed hands among various organizations, including Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (aka Willett), and currently being owned by Corner Creek Distillery Co. located in Crestwood, Kentucky. One thing has been consistent throughout the brand’s life, it has never been disclosed where the bourbon is sourced from. For the majority of the brand’s life, it has only sold as a no age statement (NAS) bourbon. This changed with the introduction of the non-chill filtered Corner Creek 10 Year.

When you’re done assembling, there’s no need to leave your joint clamped up for hours, glue is completely optional, and there are no frustrating alignment problems to deal with. Kreg Joints™ are so simple they can be built in just a few easy steps – it’s as easy as drill, drive, and you’re done!

It’s good to look back on some of your life decisions and see how those decisions either hurt or helped yourself, your family, and your spiritual life. Sometimes, you have to “kill” an action, habit, or thought in order for a new habit to be born. Sin makes us blind so it is important to reflect on what we are doing in our lives and how we are building up the Kingdom of God.

ARDBEG SCORCH COMMITTEE RELEASE
The celebration of Ardbeg Day is held annually on the final Saturday of Islay’s Festival of Music and Malt and stands as a celebration of all things Ardbeg. This year the celebration is set to be entirely online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be the second year the festival has been virtual.
“This year will be my first Ardbeg Day ever: a baptism of fire! It’s a shame we Ardbeggians can’t enjoy it together in person, but the online event is shaping up to be tremendous fun,” Ardbeg’s Distillery Manager Colin Gordon said. “With a whole virtual world to explore, including fantasy inns, campfire tales, medieval feasts and live tastings, there’s plenty for people to be excited about this year.”
The Committee Release of Ardbeg Scorch will be available to buy from Ardbeg Embassies, whisky specialists, online retailers and from the Distillery Visitor Center on May 1 for $139. The General Release will be available on June 1 at a price point of around $120. Official tasting notes can be found below.
- Color – Bright brushed gold
- Nose – On the nose, frighteningly intense aromas of soot and smoke lie in wait. Hints of aniseed and fragrant patchouli interlace with bold notes of quenched steel and saddle soap. With a drop of water, herbal top notes of briarwood, sage and pine wisp their way to the fore.
- Taste – Take a sip and experience layer upon layer of flavor. An oily mouthfeel grips the senses. Billowy clouds of sweet smoke and dragon charred oak permeate the palate, while grilled fare and black licorice weave between notes of medicinal lozenge.
- Finish – A long and heroic finale, with a subtle tarry aftertaste. A finish that will drag on, well into its happily ever after.

Fitness and Virtue with Pat Flynn – Episode 1
God didn’t just create us as spirits and then shackle us with bodies. As Catholics, we believe that the body and soul are intimately woven together, so it’s important that we work on both.
Our friend Pat Flynn has written and spoken a lot on the virtues of fitness. He also has written several books, including an Amazon #1 seller: Introduction to Kettlebells: A Minimalist’s Guide to Blasting Fat and Boosting Muscle. A writer, entrepreneur, and “re-converted” Catholic, Pat focuses his efforts on helping others find happiness and wholeness through fitness, philosophy, and faith. And now we’re teaming up with him to host a patron-exclusive class on Fitness and Virtue!
Throughout this course, Pat will discuss the role physical fitness plays in our lives and offer key insights on how to maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle—and how to avoid the spiritual pitfalls of vanity and self-absorption.
And, no, we didn’t bring Pat in to preach to a choir of Catholic gym-rats. This program is for all our listeners, regardless of your fitness level. If you’re celebrating the extra steps when you walk down the driveway to take out the trash… you’ll be inspired by Pat’s course. If you’re looking to turn that 6-pack into an 8-pack, this course can help you summit that mountain too. We encourage all of our patrons to take us up on this exclusive content!
Interested? Well listen to this first episode for free and then join us over on Patreon for access to the whole course!
