Spirituality is on the rise. Oh really? Yep. While the main-lineProtestant sects have been sidelined, and even a strictly secular view seems to be declining, there is also a robust growth of human-invented religions. Sometimes these are lite-versions of primitive tribal religions; products of “designer-tribalism”. These are often composed of attractive elements selected from ancient “nature” religions and assembled into comfortable collages tailored to justify the permissive lifestyles of today. However these belief-collages seem to be having the scary effect of decomposing our civilization. If we become spiritual, even without guidance, are not all spirits we encounter benign?

Setting the Record Straight - Shipwrecked with Robinson Crusoe

Surprise ! One of the most popular novels of all time has been heavily censored in most modern editions, not of four letter words, but of one three letter word. Hundreds of reverent references to God have been deleted as well as the three-thousand-word 3000 word island conversion narrative of Crusoe. Robinson Crusoe turns out to be even more dramatic in the original complete version. However, again contemporary culture has demonstrated its allergy to sacred themes and has to scissor them out of a masterpiece.

This is the first part of an uplifting novel, told in a number of vignettes, about a small model Viking boat that is washed out to sea and drifts around the Gulf Stream leaving a mystical mark on the lives on people along the way. The voyage starts in 18th century New France, and ends in present day New Orleans. The need to be reminded of the subtle effect of a positive Catholic atmosphere, missing in much of modern fiction, inspired Chuck Coughlin to create this heart-warming portrait of ordinary and extraordinary people.
