Quote Me S1: E7 Allan Wright; "Don't expect faith to clear things up for you. It is trust, not certainty.”

If you don’t yet have a book (or two, or three) by Allan Wright on your shelf, we encourage you to change that, pronto! Allan is a husband, father, author, theologian, speaker, and principal of Koinonia Academy in Plainfield, New Jersey. 

In researching his book, 25 Life-Changing Questions from the Gospels: Letting Jesus Lead You through the Stages of Spiritual Growth, Allan came across this quote, from Flannery O’Connor: 

“Don't expect faith to clear things up for you. It is trust, not certainty.” 

These words ignite a conversation on discernment and finding peace in your life, as well as practical tips to ensuring you’re going in the direction the Lord wills for you.

This week’s guest is the delightful Mary Harrell, Catholic radio producer and co-host of the radio show Coffee & Donuts with John & Mary, heard on Mater Dei Radio out of Portland, Oregon and 20+ markets throughout the country.

She brings our first G.K. Chesterton quote to the show (and we hope it won’t be the last!). Mary came across these lines while interviewing Dale Ahlquist for his latest book on G.K. Chesteron, Knight of the Holy Ghost.

Published on October 23, 1909 in the Illustrated London News were these words: 

“Men do not differ much about what things they will call evils; they differ enormously about what evils they will call excusable.”

Much of the conversation dealt with Confession, so we’re including links to a couple of examinations of conscience to prepare to receive the sacrament.

Tami Kiser, author, speaker, mother of many, founder of Heart Ridge Ministries, and producer of Catholic programs for women, joins us with a quote she first heard from Scott and Kimberly Hahn.

“You can’t outgive God.”

Tami shares with us how this phrase has guided her in her marriage, growing her family (she has ten children, five of whom are married, and a number of grandchildren), and in her and her husband’s work serving the Lord.

What do you say when someone you love loses a child to miscarriage? 

Lindsay lost her second child, Ethan, to miscarriage in 2012. In remembrance of Ethan during this Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, she shares her experience of a friend reaching out with words that brought comfort. Honoring the dignity of the life of the child and acknowledging the reality of the parents’ loss shows a respect for life that is often missing in people’s attempts to console, but these can make all the difference for a grieving parent (or grandparent, aunt, uncle, sibling, etc.)
