In this episode Andrew sits down with his friend Fr. Michael O’Loughlin, (FrOLo) of Holy Protection of the Mother of God Byzantine Catholic Church (HoProMoGo) and the Catholic Stuff You Should Know Podcast for a freewheeling conversation covering zebra cakes, Tsunami ninjas, Chinese throwing stars, and 90s rap mic positions, all in the context of a deep examination of the life of prayer, what happens when we ask God for something, why we should ask, and what changes when we do.

In this episode, which seemingly had a mind of its own, Andrew, after talking about Bulletproof coffee and doing an impromptu commercial for stick blenders, talks about being excited that a new cafe opened a block from his house, muses on the difficulty of the life of a independent cafe owner, and ends with a ranty muse-ish guilt trip about supporting the small businesses around you. Then, he looks at the conflict between old school feminists in light of the modern commitment to gender fluidity, all in the context of an increasing detachment from nature. Finally, he muses about a few thoughts on Suicide Squad and the nature of bad guys doing good, which we all are.

In this episode, after looking back over his trip to Cincinnati, recounting the food and coffee high points, and musing on his gratitude to his friends for helping solidify the reality and charism of Calix, Andrew explores the idea of doing big things for God as normal and real human beings, with all the weirdness that implies, who let God have their way with them vs. plaster saints who are of a different order than us humans.

Then, after an impromptu commercial for the movement Communion and Liberation and the writings of Msgr. #TheCounterPosition Episode 196 - More Episode 200 teasing, Warming Ourselves at the Dumpster Fire, Wojtyla on Cultural Resistance in the Face of Meaningless Darkness, and Wine, Tri-tip, Plato, & Martyrdom
In this episode, a frustrated distraught Andrew, after leaking more possibilities about what’s up his sleeve for Episode 200, explores how to talk about anything when the world is burning down around us, re-introduces the show to new listeners lest they think they are on the wrong channel, does a dark state of the way things are address, then looks at our response to violence and meaninglessness all around through the lens of Wojtyla’s cultural resistance to the Nazis, C.S. Lewis’ essay Learning in Wartime, and Dead Poet’s Society, then finally he proposes determining your ideal martyrdom as a good sign of what to do with your life, followed by Andrew’s description of his own entry in the new volume of Lives of the Saints if everything works out. And, as a bonus, a bat that swims.

In this episode, after confiding that he is coming off a string of Murphy’s Law curses that afternoon that began with needing 10s and 5s for the cash register and ended with his Passat’s front end pulled off on a curb, Andrew talks about breaking and “Edge-y” cabernet, dousing Chris Stefanick’s kitchen with delicious swiney pepper spray, being upset with Captain Kirk for not kissing a perfectly cute alien girl, the journey of Aquaman from super cool to Little Mermaid and back to badass, how Bernie Sanders at the DNC is like the Sex Pistols doing an album of Christmas song covers, and finally how if we can’t be united by love maybe we can be united by hate. Then, Andrew talks about the ISIS killing of an 84 year old priest in France, puts this in context of the Crusades, and explores why the direction this is going will get America emotional and make a new Crusade happen if that’s what ISIS wants.

In this episode, after trying to talk about the end of manufacturing VCRs, the new show Stranger Things, and other trivial topics, Andrew gets frustrated, abandons his show plan, and talks from his heart about the rise of terrorism as the norm, how he is getting used to seeing a daily attack on TV, his frustration in trying to figure out the relation between normal mainstream Islam and the radical strain, how to fight a foe dispersed around the world with self radicalizing memes going around Twitter, and finally exploring how these young men, who recently were not particularly religious, are suddenly willing to kill and be killed, what that tells us, and whether or not that gives us some insight into what we are doing and how to reach these young men.

In this episode Andrew explores a new brush with happiness, talks about the perfect new show Stranger Things, semi-proposes to Wynona Ryder, compares Trump support to Obama supporters never believing his stance on gay marriage, and then comments line by line through an article in Rolling Stone mocking the “WTF” positions of the Republican platform in true Counter Position muse and rant fashion. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-most-backwards-wtf-planks-in-the-gop-platform-w429468

In this episode, after recounting his first attempt at playing corn hole, Andrew gives his report on entering the crucible of hospitality that is the Golesh home, to bask in the flickering fire of a VHS tape, stuffing himself with tacos, and watching The Lion King for the first time. Then, he does the most belated and most serious commentary ever attempted on a Disney movie, exploring natural law vs. mad hunger, intimacy and sonship, the role of shame in isolating us, the forgetfulness of numbing to our past, the arousal and awakening by beauty, the mentor as one who leads us to the source of our identity, the recovery of nature, and the role of identity in our co-creation with God.

In this episode, after some shout outs and the clarification of the official position of the Counter Position on Jennefir’s obsession with Pokemon and other related fake digital news, Andrew explores a new game of pretending you don’t know what someone is obsessed with as the key to everything based on an article about Ignoring Slavoj Zizek, what that has to do with his friend who is a Cistercian monk, and how to apply that to your Thomist friends. Then, after the frivolity, he gets down to talking about the tragedy in Nice, France, Pope B16’s Regensburg address, a father throwing his daughter off a bridge, late term abortion, and how all of these are instantiations of the same putting of false ideology in front of reality before making decisions on actions.

Thursday Jul 14, 2016
In this episode, after the sushi report, a rant about glasses, Bernie selling out, and being thankful that Trump didn’t choose Newt Gingrich so he can still like him, Andrew explores the recent phenomena of Pokemon Go. In the process he talks about, Atari, living in his mom’s basement vs. his mom’s loft, people being shocked by the public being in…well…public, the strategic use of Pokemon and pizza for evangelical ends, being bigger than Porn, digitization as the spiritualization of physical goods, fiat currency, and the Austrian’s strange love for putting piles of horseradish on things.

In this episode, after extolling the virtues of cold brew coffee, bragging about his vocabulary game score, and castigating those into Pokemon, Andrew revisits race a bit, gives Texas a huge high five based on the video going around of a BLM protest and counter-protest joining sides, then goes on to approve of the way President Obama handled the memorial service for the 5 slain Dallas officers. In the last two segments he switches gears and compares a great TEDx talk on leadership to the Herbert Alphonso SJ book called Discovering Your Personal Vocation, and while riffing back on forth on both of them, comes up with some new insight into the problem of God’s will.

Monday Jul 11, 2016
In this episode, after woefully overdue birthday shout out, a pitch for a friend’s book, and extolling the glories of having roommates out of town, Andrew dives into the dangerous area of race by telling very personal stories from his growing up in a small town, very beautiful human interactions he’s had over the years, and exploring the nature of police training vs. human nature under pressure. Then, he explores the philosophy of what unites us, talks about the error of elevating something non-essential to the level of essential and why that divides us, making things worse.

In this episode Andrew reflects back on a low key and somewhat melancholic holiday weekend, covering the idiocy of beach goers who don’t know our independence was from England or when it happened, the happiness of Ethiopian skateboarders, the weirdness of imitating warfare with fireworks, a strange existential moment with a flag, and an accidentally depressing last segment on the transition out of the young adult scene for older singles/the search for community.

#TheCounterPosition Episode 184 - An Explosion of Freedom
Friday Jul 01, 2016
Friday Jul 01, 2016
In this episode, after musing on the end of the 2 week day job Ironman he’s been running and the subsequent sushi coma, talks about freedom, regaling you with stories of the glories of fireworks in Fillmore, CA, throwing bottle rockets as masculine development, and having giant bottle rocket wars in the clay pits of his home town as a boy, along with his possible lead contamination. Then, he uses the first couple passages of the Declaration of Independence to muse the nature of freedom, the role the divine plays in it, whether that’s forcing religion on anyone, and just what in the world we might have been up to with this upstart experiment called America back in 1776. Boom!!!
