In this rambling and gestalt episode, a post-insomnia Andrew does what he does best when he’s half asleep- rant and muse. This time he goes off people who talk on cell phones in coffeehouse, putting people in cubicles, and cubicle workers who turn wherever they are into a cubicle. Then, he muses about meeting up with his friend from college and talking about how classically educated people can be intellectually hipster, in that they set up ideals and then settle if they can’t reach them. Finally, after watching two random videos in the middle of the night, one from Soma and one on Joel Salatin and Polyface Farms, he muses on what they might have in common.

Then, he takes SNL to task for using the memory of one of the greatest songwriters to ever live, Leonard Cohen, for a cheap political bit. Finally, he explores the new movie Arrival and uses it to muse on the nature of language and it’s relationship to experience and communication.

The Counter Position Episode 247- TGIF: Election Week Edition
Friday Nov 11, 2016
Friday Nov 11, 2016
In this episode, at the urging of Michael Miley and others, a frustrated and worn out Andrew does a very personal and unscripted show sharing his experience of the last week in which we’ve seen Donald Trump elected president, a nation divided even more, half the nation cast as racist, misogynist, xenophobes, and friends of different political stripes turning on each other. Then, after an attempt at levity talking about how the old men at the club think he’s crazy for taking cold showers, Andrew finishes with a stream of consciousness plea for us to live in a different way and repair the divisions by letting the wise insight of our Church’s social doctrine guide us into living in a different and compelling way.

In this episode Andrew muses on the election of Donald Trump, explores post-industrialism, the Rust Belt, and whether half of America is now racist and misogynist. Then he looks to a video he saw about lobsters and their shells and uses it as a metaphor for the constraints of the Liberal/Conservative dichotomy and proposes Catholic Social Doctrine as a new fresh optic on these issues. Finally, he talks about a song and playlist designed to reduce anxiety. Monday Nov 07, 2016
In this freewheeling and somewhat scattered episode, Andrew, after an unplanned rant about reality after this election cycle, talks about seeing the amazing singer/songwriter David Ramirez at the Larimer Lounge and muses on a great line about cell phones and the holy, then uses Dr. Strange to talk about how religions, now matter how Gnostic, can’t seem to really disconnect from the integral nature of the body and matter. Finally, after a shout out to a great couple he met in the shop, he explores how real digital community is in some ways more dangerous than mere distraction, and how it puts us in community, but keeps us from being in community with people around us.

In this episode, after a chatty first segment, Andrew rants about his lost ability to sleep like the dead for a long time at will, rants more about the 60gb of “other” taking up his storage on his Mac, then turns to musing on two ways to communicate the divine- the communication of longing and the communication of encounter in our narrative.

Thursday Nov 03, 2016
In this episode, after ranting about traffic and sun glare, a note stuck to his microphone arm asks to be on the show and Andrew obliges, which was a bad idea. Then, Andrew, reluctantly, and not without hesitation and qualification, congratulates the Cubs on their World Series win. Moving on from the pain of that, Andrew talks about his weekend in Flint, MI, being beat up by travel on Tuesday, and his flight attendant in First Class on the plane making the most of his limits and working beautifully and humanely in such a confined service model. Finally, he talks about cork taint in wine and shares a cool hack to fix it, followed by a quick last minute big picture look at Hillary and Trump.

The Counter Position Episode 239- Sick Day Musings & Recipes
Thursday Oct 27, 2016
Thursday Oct 27, 2016
In this episode Andrew, after regrettably giving away the recipe for the Curry Pumpkin Chicken Soup on Monday, continues his sickness induced generosity and, after musing on the nature of being sick, the emergence of the cravings of childhood, and the role that rituals and their development play in being sick, gives out recipes for his quick fast chicken stock, hot toddy, and the famous and fabled Coffeeboy Sick Tea, with a bonus of the role of bourbon in all this. Then, he defends it being within the bounds of Charity for a Cardinals fan to hate the Cubs and root for Cleveland, looks at the role Google plays in what political mail lands where in our inboxes, and finishes with the impression of having witnessed a liturgy that comes from watching an Apple keynote.

In this episode a frustrated and possibly getting sick Andrew attempts to do his weekend recap segment, including the epic yearly event that is Crocktoberfest, but gets distracted and does an impromptu buying guide on dutch ovens, followed by an even more impromptu and ill-advised tutorial, giving away his most popular soup recipe. (He must be getting sick.) Then, inspired by the Facebook post of an eccentric priest, he muses on whether we can just punt from now on in the political realm and just expect martyrdom from one side or the other, but fights that idea/impulse with his newfound optimism with Catholic Social Doctrine, his reading of Loaves and Fishes by Dorothy Day, and a NYT article on the “The Power of a Dinner Table.” http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/18/opinion/the-power-of-a-dinner-table.html?_r=0

In this episode Andrew records a show on his last day before his first day off in a long time. After some random shenanigans he settles into talking about a controversy over a giant mesh nude sculpture in San Leandro, CA, muses on why we are so squeamish about nudity in the modern world, and relays his experience of being surrounded by nude sculpture in Vienna, Austria. Next he explores the fact that a new book by J.R.R. Tolkien is coming out thanks to the editing work of his son Christopher, musing on the nature of that particular form of genius that can hold attention on one thing for long periods of time while having a deep deep understanding of the big picture of reality. Finally, Andrew applies this ruminating on his experience of meeting and visiting with Tim Goodrich, the founder and boot maker at Sutorial in Flint, MI, and how beautiful it is to pay for something that will last forever if cherished because it is the record of a few days of one mans sustained attention to a skill he is mastering more and more all the time.

The Counter Position Episode 235- God Moved in Flint, MI
Wednesday Oct 19, 2016
Wednesday Oct 19, 2016
In this episode, a bedraggled Andrew records an early morning edition after his marathon of Calix travel through 3 cities in three weeks.
As best as caffeine would allow, he attempted to tell the story of his
amazing providence-haunted trip to Flint, MI, including: a singing bus
driver, White Castle, an amazing singer/songwriter who’s a priest and
totally Andrew’s new BFF for ever, the stark beauty and decay of
post-industrialism, bumping into a roaster, bumping into a farm, bumping
into his old roommate, bumping into an OT prophetess/Dorothy Day, and
returning an entire city’s Church to the model in the New Testament. He
forgot to mention almost being blown up by a gas leak. And so so so much
more.

“blank slate” of empty buildings and gets sidetracked by one of his
best childhood stories about burning trash and exploding florescent
light bulb tubes. Finally, he explores the evidence being offered for
why we are in a simulation by Elon Musk etc. and shows that much of it
is religious evidence in a context where faith is not acceptable.

Tuesday Oct 04, 2016
Tuesday Oct 04, 2016
In
this episode, from the St. Dominic Priory in St. Louis, MO, Andrew
muses on his different experience of St. Louis from when he was young,
then turns to his friends’ wedding on Friday,
his friends’ loss of their infant son over the weekend, and his
friend’s ordination, all under the theme of a quote from theologian Hans
Urs Von Balthasar, “Love wants to make a vow.” Then, he turns to an
article sent to him by Michael Miley about Millennials not having kids
and looks at why that is so based on what we just mused on about his
weekend. And, in classic fashion, the end of the show sneaks up on him.
