The Frank Friar - Episode 89: A Lesson From My Father and the Eucharist

June 4, 2018

We just celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi.  As a priest I spend a lot of time preparing my homilies.  As I was preparing for this feast day my mind kept going to a lesson from my father about life in the woods.  As I pondered that lesson I offer it to you and the insight it offers us on the Eucharist.

The Frank Friar - Episode 88: A Barrier to Prayer

May 30, 2018

As I reflect about my time of recovery my mind goes to the relationship between my times of prayer and reading.  Many good things can become barriers to our life of prayer.  In today’s podcast, I reflect upon how we can have barriers to our lives of prayer from the goods we have cultivated.  “What are our barriers to prayer?” is an important question we cannot be afraid to ask ourselves.  Take care my brothers and sisters know I am praying for you.

The Frank Friar - Episode 87: The Holy Trinity: A Few Thoughts

May 28, 2018

We are in the shadow of the Feast of the Holy Trinity.  During my time of recovery I read many books.  One of the books I read was by Bishop Robert Barron called Exploring Catholic Theology.  One of the regular themes he has in this book is that we “ARE” a relationship to God.  What does this for us in relationship to the Trinity?  Today, I talk about this idea from Bishop Barren and our lives.  I hope these thoughts helps to feed your soul today.

The Frank Friar - Episode 86: The Media, Truth, and The Holy Spirit

May 23, 2018

Part of my life as a friar and a priest is the need to stay current about timely invents to serve the people of the area.  For a while now I just see a big sickness in the mainstream media.  As disciples of Christ we are called to be discerners of Truth.  Yet, we do not discern alone but have been given certain gifts from the Spirit.  A few of the gifts that are important in our relationship with the media is the gift of knowledge, understanding, and wisdom.  Slander and Libel are serious concerns that both Pope Benedict XVI and Francis have told us about and called out the media on.  I hope my thoughts help you to continue to grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ, which is done through the power of the Spirit.

The Frank Friar - Episode 84: Vocal Prayer: A Gift with Limits

May 16, 2018

While I am recovering I am reading more and more books.  One type of things I am reading is older Carmelite writers.  Today, I offer a reflection of one of his (Fr. Daniel of Virgin Mary) about the topic of vocal prayer.  It is a means of entering into a life of prayer, but we also need to be aware how it can limit our relationship with Jesus Christ.

The Frank Friar - Episode 82: The Ascension and Angels

May 9, 2018

Recently, I caught up with one of my Carmelite brothers at our National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.  He and I started to speak about the Feast of the Ascension coming up.  He reminded me that the angels stood among the disciples.  In the podcast episode today, I try to unpack what we can learn from the reality that the angels stood among the disciples during the Ascension.

The Frank Friar - Episode 81: The Three Hermits and Our Ego

May 7, 2018

As, I am still recovering from my surgery, I am trying to the time to catch up on things.  One of the things I am trying to catch up on is my reading list.  One of the people I am reading now is Leo Tolstoy.  I am reading some of his short stories.  His short story called The Three Hermits is one of my favorites.  There is a lot of insights and wisdoms we can learn from this story, but today I wanted to reflect on the importance of humility and our spiritual lives.

The Frank Friar - Episode 79: Gifts from the Children

April 30, 2018

Right now, I am recovering from surgery in upstate New York.  Recently, during my recovery our students from our two Carmelite schools in the Bronx sent me ‘Get well’ letters.  To say that I started to cry while reading these letters would be an understatement.  While reading these letters I noticed that my little acts of just being present to the kids, meant the world to them, which I was surprised by.  Today, I offer a reflection about what we can learn from these little moments that meant so much to these kids.

The Frank Friar - Episode 78: The Race of St. Mark and His Gospel!

April 25, 2018

April 25th is the feast day of St. Mark the Evangelist.  Biblical scholars believe his was the first gospel written.  The Gospel of St. Mark also has a connection to the Roman community of St. Peter.  Today, I offer an insight about time and pace within the Gospel of St. Mark.  Even though his gospel is short, its richness can never be exhausted.  I hope this insights helps you to sit with this Gospel a little bit more in your day to day life.

The Frank Friar - Episode 76: Vocation and Youth: A thought about our Youths message to the Bishops

April 18, 2018

Since, its release my mind and heart has been reading and praying over the preparatory document that the youth put out for the bishops of the world.  It is a rich document that deserves our respect and time.  Within the document the youth offer us a keen insight on paths towards vocation and mission.  They remind us about the need to see vocation not as a merely moment choice, but something that encompasses the full life of a person.  In this episode, I talk about that seed of wisdom the youth offer us and my own thought about death in relationship to vocation discernment and commitment.

The Frank Friar - Episode 75: Pope Francis, Silence, and Gaudete et Exsultate

April 17, 2018

Pope Francis released an apostolic exhortation this week on holiness.  Within this document he has several thoughts about silence in the life of holiness.  If his comments are taken out of context, Our Holy Father is treating the gift and tool of silence in a harsh way.  In the podcast episode today, I offer a way for us to understand his words, particularly in the context of this document.  Silence can never be an excuse or an escape from the life of charity that we are all called to.
