Saturday Jun 16, 2018
Saturday Jun 16, 2018
Women and The Catholic Church. How has the Catholic Church affected the status of women? Surprise ! The Catholic Church has done more to elevate the status of women than any other entity in history. Isn’t it well known that the Catholic Church is an old fashioned remanent of inflexible Patriarchy ? Hasn’t the Catholic Church stood athwart the path of the progressive liberation of women blocking the way and yelling “Stop ! ” ? Mythbusting again, Chuck brings an authoritatively documented rebuttal of common misconceptions about how it happened that, in some societies, women have risen to take their place as equals today. It was, in great part, the influence of Catholicism.

What Good are Monks? A Protestant friend asked this question and I was rendered speechless. Where do you begin to describe the thanks we owe to monks for the stupendous gifts they gave us? They created and provided a great part of of what we think of as our civilization. They created the university system, the foundations of science, the foundations of modern agriculture, etcetera. Listen and be amazed at this forgotten history. It is a big subject so this is part one of two podcasts.

Setting the Record Straight - Confounding Heretics With Corpus Christi - 5/19/18
Saturday May 19, 2018
Saturday May 19, 2018
All over the world there will be bold public processions this week which bear the Eucharist in a monstrance for all to witness an amazing truth; the Presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, appearing on earth in this place and moment in that Eucharist. In the USA, May 31st, 2018 is the Feast of Corpus Christi (“Body Of Christ”).
Just as many could not believe their eyes when they saw Christ who had risen from the dead, there are many today who doubt the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Too many Catholics are shy, even apologetic, about sharing their conviction that, when we receive the Eucharist, we are touched by Christ’s physical Body and Blood. (“Touch me and see…” Luke 24:39). This intimate contact usually happens inside our churches.
Corpus Christi processions go outside of our churches as bold public proclamations of the truth of the Presence. That intent was made plain by Pope Urban IV who established the Feast of Corpus Christi seven-hundred-and-fifty-four years ago with the Bull, “Transiturus de hoc mundo”. With clarity he wrote: ”…we think suitable and worthy that, at least once a year – especially to confound the lack of faith and the infamy of heretics – a more solemn and honorable memory of this Sacrament be held.”

It was a handwritten note. One of the three men who had been rescued from North Korea handed it to Mike Pence, our Vice President as soon as he met him. It was Thursday May 10th, 2018. The Vice President had gone to welcome them home. He read the note. It was the 126th Psalm. Why were these men imprisoned? They had something in common that was fatally dangerous to the North Korean government. They were Christian Evangelists. The note began, “Psalm 126:1-3.
When the Lord brought back the captives to Zion. We were like men that dreamed…”

Amusing stories of miracles performed by saints. But these stories are mostly forgotten today, perhaps because, in this skeptical age they seem unimportant and a bit embarrassing to Catholics. Yet, given God’s powerful authenticated miracles , they seem to be certainly possible Perhaps they are true, partly true, or perhaps they are just invented tales. They are called hagiographies, that is, biographies that put the saint in a very flattering light. Hagiographies make the subjects seems like saints. Whether these particular miracles happened or not, they were saints for other reasons.

Setting the Record Straight - The Eucharist War - 4/28/18

It is necessary for you to enter the Adoration Chapel.
Evil is often done by ordinary men. Evil is banal. If you haven’t realized this then you have not been awake to the domain of pain which we inhabit. We are in great peril, teetering on the cliff edge of chaos. But since some cannot admit it their vision reaches only to the the curtains of their dreams. They ignore the chaos beyond the window.
A rational materialist sees what is happening and hardens or despairs. An ordinary man may commit astoundingly evil acts under the influence of a faulty ideology. When one does believe, however, and realizes the truth of the Presence, one will perceive that the depravity of the world will finally be healed. When we merge with the Presence order assembles out of chaos. This podcast was inspired by the work of the phenomenal Jordan Peterson.

Jordan Peterson has created a sensation. He is a Canadian Professor of Psychology whose Book “12 rules For Life” is the #1 Best Seller on Amazon. He gives numerous sold-out lectures on college campus. Pay attention, because this rebellious and brilliant academic, whose religious preference is hidden, may be the one of most effective evangelists for Catholicism today. One of his basic messages is that we must recognize the fallen nature of humanity. And confront it. And understand that we are inhabited by Eden’s snake. Check out the “You Tubes” of Peterson’s devastation debates and gentle yet fiery lectures. There is no one like him.

Setting the Record Straight - The Slavery Weed - 4/6/18
Friday Apr 06, 2018
Friday Apr 06, 2018
No matter how often slavery is abolished it sprouts up again and again like a weed. But when and where was slavery abolished? Well…the full answer is complicated. Slavery was abolished over and over again in various locations. A simplified answer might be that it was opposed and/or abolished frequently in a lot of places, most often in a time and place where the Catholic Church was influential. Most educated people know about the achievements of Wilberforce and Lincoln. But those two men were late to the game of abolishing slavery. Under Catholic emperors the late Roman Empire abolished slavery a millennium-and-one-half before Wilberforce. All this leads to “Another Daring Proposition”from Setting The record Straight”. Catholicism did more to abolish slavery than any other entity.

It was the great age of the Irish monks. With an ardor first ignited by Saint Patrick they managed to save us from the Muslims and from something worse, from the worst part of ourselves. Think of Saint Columbkille who led his army as they slew three-thousand-and-one souls in the dispute over a transgression Columbkille had committed. He had copied by hand a valuable yet private book. A Book War! The first founding copyright case ! What a bibliophile ! Soon he confessed his mortal sin. His Penance was to be exiled from his beloved Ireland and to go and save three-thousand-and-one souls in just measure. He did more…much more than that. He renewed the sweet Christian spirit, the towering intellectual pursuit, and the fiery spiritual ardor of our beloved Catholic Church bringing the brilliance of Christ of light to millions in a world teetering on the edge of chaos.

For Lent Chuck returns to the profound and beautiful thoughts of Paul Claudel on The Apostles Creed. Many people who have read Paul Claudel (1868-1955) regard him as the greatest modern Catholic writer and poet. Yet he remains almost totally unknown, even to Catholics. He wrote in his native French and most of his work remains untranslated. Claudel studied for a diplomatic career, but was also attracted to writing. He succeeded spectacularly in both realms. When he became France’s Ambassador to the USA he appeared on the cover of Time magazine. He was even honored by Pope Pius XII in an unprecedented ceremony in the Vatican. Here is a Catholic writer that deserves being rediscovered.
These selections do not duplicate the Claudel writings Chuck used in past Lenten seasons.

Each culture is derived from its “cult”, its manners and morals from its culture, and its laws from its culture. Catholic philosophy imprinted each of these aspects of modern life. Prominent scholars have made a convincing case that the our Mother Church gave birth to our standards and laws. In the 12th century a catholic jurist named Gratian created the first concordance and codification of international laws, the “Concordia discordantium canonum”. Even our standards governing warfare has been shaped by the Church.

Setting the Record Straight - Mother Of Our Laws - The Catholic Church - 1/30/18
Wednesday Jan 31, 2018

Do the humane laws of modern nations derive from English Common Law? This is often asserted. Are modern concepts of fair play and humane treatment of others the result of the slowly evolving trial-and-error improvement of standards of behavior? Maybe it was the Age of Reason. Or should we thank the Enlightenment? Or attribute it to the suppression of the “patriarchy”. Actually the advance in morality and laws occurred rather rapidly when our big Mother arrived.
