And Mary Said, Verse 46
Saturday Jan 14, 2017
Saturday Jan 14, 2017
Mary’s name is from the root for myrrh, meaning bitter. The tree sap that produces myrrh gathers in “tears,” when the bark is deeply scored, which are cherished and collected for their extreme value. Myrrh is the balsam of suffering, purification, and death, as it was used as an antiseptic, an opiate to deaden pain, and in the embalming and preparation of bodies for burial.
See how your Mother loves you? She helps ease your suffering, and purify and prepare your soul for eternal life.

An Introduction to Mary’s Magnificat
Saturday Jan 07, 2017
Saturday Jan 07, 2017
What happens when a prayerful young peasant receives a whisper so powerful that she dares not tell it? She hugs the secret close. And it is incarnated.
Going over and over the reality in her mind, she touches it timidly and unwraps it with equally unspeakable thrill each time. Looking at its significance from every possible angle, replaying the words repeatedly, jumping up and down and twirling around in her soul until she’s dizzy with the implications, she “ponders it in her heart.”
And when someone else, a cousin, reveals that she too knows and understands and believes what unspeakable thing has happened, the riot of praise and poetry and stupendous irony fizz out of her, spreading out in a pool of song that runs up the sides of the hills of history like a wave.
This is Mary’s Magnificat. This is Mary’s Song. Hers is the song of the Church.

A Throne for God: The “How” of the OT
Saturday Dec 31, 2016
Saturday Dec 31, 2016
When my sister was little, she ran to my mother after a nightmare. Attempting to soothe her fears, my mother told her she should pray to Jesus and remember He is always with her. With worry wrinkling her forehead, my sister replied, “But Mama, I need somebody with skin on ‘em!”
The tabernacle and its Ark of the Covenant were the Old Testament expression of God’s desire to be present with His people. Jesus, our new Covenant, and Mary our new Ark, carry this expression forward into the Church, where God is still present on His throne.

A Woven Veil, The “How” of the OT
Saturday Dec 24, 2016
Saturday Dec 24, 2016
The stunning vintage samplers crafted by my mother’s respectful fingers might take your breath away.
Hundreds of thousands of colorful hand-stitches and hours of painstaking concentration and deliberation go into these linens of love, such as this Quaker Sampler called Vierlande 1826. Doesn’t it make your soul sigh just to look at the joy that left her hand? Delicate finery is fearfully, wonderfully made.
The Old Testament tabernacle veil teaches that you, Dear One, are also uniquely “stitched” together with a similar unrepeatable purpose, careful respect, and wondrous appreciation. Do not doubt your wonderful nature, for you are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14).

Holy Smoke! Why Do We Use Incense?
Saturday Dec 17, 2016
Saturday Dec 17, 2016
My pastor loves the liturgy; he uses incense like a fumigator when it’s called for. By the end of the weekend’s Masses you have to part the smoke with your hands to see the altar. The old ladies cough and sneeze and dab their rolling eyes, but I love the way it gets in my clothes and hair. I take it home and inhale the scent of prayer for the rest of the day. Combining incense, liturgy, sacrifice, and prayer was God’s idea!

Light of the World, Lampstand and Magisterium: Making Sense of the Old Testament
Saturday Dec 03, 2016
Saturday Dec 03, 2016
Like Moses, his priesthood and elders, and the Jewish Sanhedrin after them, the Church is “watched over” and illuminated by the ministry of the priestly and apostolic Magisterium. The Deposit of Faith, which includes the Bible and Sacred Tradition, has been guarded and preserved for us for two millennia by the teaching authority of the Church.
As Saint Paul commands, we need both Scripture and Tradition: “So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth [tradition] or by letter [scripture]” (2 Tim 2:15). The world needs this light and truth. “There is an organic connection between our spiritual life and the dogmas. Dogmas are lights along the path of faith; they illuminate it and make it secure. Conversely, if our life is upright, our intellect and heart will be open to welcome the light shed by the dogmas of faith” (CCC 89).

The Laver and Baptism: The “How” of the Old Testament
Saturday Nov 19, 2016
Saturday Nov 19, 2016
The Old Testament laver teaches us that cleansing and purity is necessary for all those who would approach God. The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus when John baptized Him in the Jordan River. The dove was real, not symbolic; the Holy Spirit was real, not symbolic. John the Baptist was a witness that Jesus’ baptism was literal, physical, and spiritual. I can know with certainty that through baptism in water the Holy Spirit descends upon me, follows me as the water-Rock in the desert, and reconfigures me into a “new creation” of Christ.

Our Catholic Way Episode 37: Former Presbyterian and New Age Seeker Cari Donaldson
Saturday Oct 22, 2016
Saturday Oct 22, 2016
Author and blogger Cari Donaldson is the first to tell you she didn't grasp Christianity when she was a kid. Sure she attended church each week and prayed to God, but the understanding of the Holy Spirit evaded her.
Believing that Jesus was a created being, like a human son, she branched out into the New Age movement in hopes of discovering the answers to all of life's tough questions. The quest for knowing the Creator lead her to Christ. Hear her tell her fascinating story of discovery on this week's edition of Our Catholic Way!

The Resurrection of the Dead Stick: The “How” of the Old Testament
Saturday Oct 22, 2016
Saturday Oct 22, 2016
I have found in explaining my conversion that nothing irritates people like the priesthood. The priest is usually a person’s first direct exposure to Church hierarchy, and let’s face it, authority just rubs us all the wrong way when it doesn’t conform to what we think or want.
Institutional priesthood is God’s idea.

Keeping Time with God: The “How” of the Old Testament
Saturday Oct 15, 2016
Saturday Oct 15, 2016
Rest, worship, and celebration are not luxury, they are spiritual discipline. Our liturgical feasts help us re-participate in the saving action of God in Christ by making the past events of His life present to us through our observance, by interrupting and ordering all our doing, and by inherently connecting us to all past, present, and future saints. Whose great idea was the liturgical schedule? It was God’s!

Friday Oct 14, 2016
Friday Oct 14, 2016
Jennifer Longworth grew up as the daughter of a Methodist minister and she'll be the first to tell you that she was not the stereotypical bad preacher's kid (PK). She loved her faith and family and was overjoyed when she first heard about the Reformation in school. Episode 35: Former Southern Baptist Fr. Charles Merrill
Tuesday Oct 11, 2016
Tuesday Oct 11, 2016
Long before I met Father Charles Merrill and he donned a collar and cassock, he was a fairly content Southern Baptist. Raised in the Bible belt he learned to love Jesus both at church and at home. But over time he became less enchanted with the teachings of "The Holy Book" and more enthralled with discoveries from history books and other intellectual pursuits. It would take a friend full of zeal for the Reformation to ignite his curiosity of Christian history. Once he began studying, the rest as they say is...well...history.

The “How” of the Old Testament: Tabernacle Overview
Saturday Oct 08, 2016
Saturday Oct 08, 2016
Many people believe the Catholic Church arbitrarily “invented” and imposed beliefs and practices on the faithful throughout her history. Why do we believe and practice such “weird” things? Why incense, for instance? Who says we have to listen to the Magisterium of the Church? Is purgatory even real?
Catholic worship was God’s idea. So worship is not about me - what I like or what satisfies me most. Worship is about what draws me into the closest proximity to God. Discover the roots of your worship with me, in the tabernacle part of the Making Sense of the Old Testament series.
